Sault Ste. Marie Canal - A Giant Leap!

For the first time in more than a decade, the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site is empty, revealing the very bottom of the historic lock. Engineers will be venturing far below the water line to repair the upstream butterfly valves near the stop logs, fix the sill where the winter gates sit at the downstream end of the lock, and replace the ladders. The lock was drained in two days using three 50 hp pumps located in the historic site’s original powerhouse!
