Sundridge ~ Quaint Village on Lake Bernard
Nestled in the heart of the lush rolling hills of the picturesque Almaguin Highlands is the lovely village of Sundridge. This quaint little village, located at the intersection of Highways 11 and 124, has a population of approximately 1000 people.
Residents welcome visitors and guests to share in the enjoyment of living on the shores of beautiful Lake Bernard, listed in the Guinness World Book of Records as being the largest freshwater lake without an island. A part of Ontario's Near North, this village has a lot to offer.
Sundridge was established in the year 1889. Originally it was supposed to be named Sunny Ridge, but an error at the post office department resulted in the name becoming Sundridge. The first inhabitants of the area were those of the Algonquin Tribe, a peaceful people who established a treaty with the French Fur Trappers who arrived in the area in the early 1800's. In 1875 the Booth Railway was built and lumbering began in earnest in the Algonquin Park area.
This year round playground has provided many years of pleasure to the residents and visitors to the area. Many people have enjoyed warm summer days on its sandy beaches and swimming in its shallow waters as well as boating and fishing the plentiful lake trout and whitefish.
A casual stroll through the village streets will make visitors aware of the many unique businesses and restaurants that exist. The charming Caswell Resort is centrally located and is only steps away from the Water Front and municipal dock. While visiting the area you can enjoy delicious, homemade pasta at Danny's Justa Pasta, located on Highway 11.
Just outside of the village you will find yourself in a lovely hardwood forest, which lends itself to the production of some of the world's best maple syrup. In the spring, many syrup producers open their doors offering maple products and tours of their sugar bush. In the fall, Sundridge Maple Sugar House is backed by a beautiful backdrop of fall foliage as is Lake Bernard.
If you are looking for luxury and elegance in a rustic setting, the lovely Northridge Inn & Resort is the place to stay. Nestled into a ridge overlooking the south shore of Lake Bernard, the Inn's exceptional setting compliments the rugged beauty of the northern Canadian landscape with just the right amount of manicured lawn and fresh cut flowers. This facility offers fine dining and exceptional cuisine at Adrian's Restaurant, a conference centre, a large sandy beach, paddleboats, bonfire parties, corn/lobster roasts and much more.
If you are up for some fishing why not book a fishing charter with We Fish Charters and Angling in Sundridge.
If you love camping you may want to stop at Lake Bernard Park, "home of the happy camper". This picturesque campground, located at the South end of Lake Bernard, features private and group sites in both shaded and open locations. Enjoy the magnificent view from nearby High Rock, take a ride in the covered wagon or delight in a round of mini golf with the family. There are paddle boats, hiking trails, a preschooler play area and a lovely sandy beach, not to mention swimming, boating and fishing.
If you are just passing through, stop and visit for a while and see for yourself what makes Sundridge a wonderful place to visit.
