There is pure relaxation in store for those who visit Lake Nipissing's South Shore region in Ontario's Near North. You will enjoy driving the quaint countryside along the back roads, and visiting the various communities along the way. Just prior to reaching the lovely community of Callander there is a scenic lookout over Lake Nipissing, providing spectacular sunset views. An historic plaque at the site explains the formation of the Nipissing Basin during the glacial retreat.

Callander, a small but popular community, has much to offer including two public boat launches and two lovely beaches Centennial Park Beach and Sunbeam Beach, both located along Main Street. There are numerous artisans and craftspeople offering everything from pottery to watercolor paintings. The North Bay Yacht Club has a private marina at Callander's waterfront.
The recent re-introduction of the Trumpeter Swans to Callander Bay has added a new thrill for bird watching enthusiasts. While visiting, why not enjoy a delicious gourmet meal at the Ram's Head Restaurant. If you are looking for a Bed and Breakfast try the Fiddler's Inn right beside the Ram's Head Restaurant both on Callander's Main Street.
Check out the Callander Bay Heritage Museum located on Lansdowne Street. Dr. Allan Roy Dafoe, world famous country doctor to the Dionne Quintuplets had his residence and practice in this eight-room, beautifully maintained building from 1914 to 1943. Many artifacts from the Quints and area history can be seen from May to September. Also in the Museum is the Alex Dufresne Gallery, featuring six changeable Art Exhibits annually. These exhibitions highlight the fine talents and craftspeople from area artists.
Travelling the many side roads is a great way to explore this picturesque region. Wasi Falls Road takes you to Wasi Falls, at the mouth of the Wasi River, which flows into Lake Nipissing. This enchanting spot is a major spawning ground for pike and pickerel (walleye).
The Township of Nipissing is located on the south side of Lake Nipissing and is home to a number of smaller lakes where seasonal holiday camps abound offering access to waterways making the Township a perfect travel destination for hunters, anglers and outdoor lovers. Many outdoor recreational activities are available within Township boundaries such as: chartered fishing tours, duck hunting, ice fishing and nature tours. Communities in the Township include Nipissing and Commanda.
During the 1870's, the completion of the historic Rosseau-Nipissing Road brought more settlers to the area. At that time, Nipissing Village was the area's business centre, much larger than the struggling community of North Bay. With the building of the railroad in 1886, the road lost much of its use and North Bay began to grow. Nipissing Village rests along the South River which leads into the South Bay of Lake Nipissing.
Inside the Nipissing Village Museum, housed in an original log church built in 1882, historic records for genealogical research, antique utensils and pioneer artifacts are on display to captivate imaginations and recreate those pioneer days. The museum is open June 15 to September 1.
