Ultimate Urban Adventures

The city is an urban adventure action-packed haven. Here's how to plan your ultimate urban adventure trip to Sault Ste. Marie. You can experience it all in just 4 steps.

1. Paddle

Tourism SSM

Launch your canoe or kayak at the Bellvue Marina and paddle west toward downtown for the best view of the International Bridge. You will pass by City Hall, Clergue Park, Art Gallery of Algoma, Station Mall and more.

Caribou Expeditions has everything you'll need to paddle your way through your next adventure to Sault Ste. Marie.

2. Bike

Tourism SSM

Hiawatha Highlands is located within the city of Sault Ste. Marie. In the winter the double track is used as cross country ski trails and in the spring, summer, and fall the double track along with the single track make up an amazing network of mountain bike trails. Stream crossings, spectacular views, winding and smooth single track, and double track that rolls through hardwood forest and pine plantations make this area one that beginner to advanced riders can enjoy. Those riders looking for a beginner challenge may want to stay on the double track. These trails are wide and not as technically challenging as the single track, giving the rider the opportunity to take in some scenery. For those who are looking for more of a challenge, try riding the single track that weaves onto and off of the double track throughout this area. The single track here is so velvety smooth and winding that it is often compared to a roller coaster ride.

Velorution Dirt Park is located at the Velorution Bike shop and includes a “Pump Track” and a “Jump Park”.The pump track is a looped track with small (1/2 – 1m) bumps throughout. These bumps are used to pump off of, making it possible to finish a loop without pedaling. The park is designed to help develop agility and off road bike handling skills. Weekly time trials on the “pump track” start in May and continue throughout the summer, and they are great fun for riders of all abilities. The “Jump Park” is rated at advanced where riders can spend the day jumping to perfect their aerial stunts.Users of the “Velorution Dirt Park” are asked to pay a user fee and sign a waiver.

Esposito Park Pump Track is a brand new additon to the city and right downtown. Three pump tracks are on one site.  One track is for people of all ages to enjoy, from young children to skateboarders to cyclists, even those in wheelchairs if they so desire (just about anything goes, as long as its non-motorized). The second track is a competition oval, the third, a butterfly-shaped track, also for competition. All three tracks may be used recreationally, and each are asphalt-covered.

A pump track is a bicycle course dotted with bumps, jumps and berms in which the rider uses his or her own weight to get through it without continuously pedalling the bicycle.

3. Run/Walk

Tourism SSM

The Hub Trail is a 22.5km, multi-use, non-motorized trail offering you an interactive experience around one of Canada’s oldest settlements.

Enjoy the sights and sounds as you explore the 2.6km of Trail through the City’s downtown core. The Downtown Waterfront section begins at Trail Marker 0.0km and resumes at 21.5km. It stretches along the scenic St. Marys River, one of the most important natural features of Sault Ste. Marie. This area is home to many tourist destinations, including the Roberta Bondar Park, Pavilion, and Marina, the Sault Ste. Marie Museum, the Art Gallery of Algoma, and shops where you can find unique local treasures.

4. Fish the St. Mary's river rapids

Tourism SSM

The famous St. Marys River Rapids are located in the heart of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and represent a short stretch of the St. Marys River which drains Lake Superior into Lake Huron. Accessible only from the Canadian side, the Rapids offer wadeable, open river conditions that will challenge your angling savvy. The Rapids support annual runs of Steelhead, Atlantic Salmon, Chinook and Pink Salmon as well as a resident population of Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Whitefish.

Bonus

A brand-new free outdoor fitness centre is now open and gives visitors the chance to workout at the waterfront. A first for the city, the new outdoor facility is located at Clergue Park, and provides plenty of equipment to get a full workout in. Watch the video below to learn more about the equipment and programs it has to offer, free of charge, to the public.
