Family Day Weekend !
Don't be devastated from the lack of snow, we know it has been a less then ideal Canadian winter. But for those of you who are still keen and ready to go, a little travel goes a long way. With Family Day weekend fast approaching it is a great idea to check out some of these OFSC Districts that still have trails open.We know you're going to have fun! District 1
Perth, Smith Falls, Calabogie Areas
A great location for families looking for the whole package. With trails on limited/open right now, you can expect to find pretty good conditions considering the winter we have had. It is pretty close to the GTA so it doesn't break the bank in gas mileage. Seeing as it is close to the Ottawa area, you can even go take part in Winterlude and skate on the Rideau Canal and take part in their fantastic winter hotel packages.
District 6
Haliburton, Renfrew, Pembroke Areas
Great for those who want to experience the truth winters without traveling way up north to get them in Ontario. With lots of great accommodations in this area with luxurious spas, you will be in heaven and not want to leave. Trails in this area are open/with a few showing limited. It will make for great all day rides, or even hoping over night to different resorts. If you are in Haliburton next week be sure to sign up for our Try Riding tour, the last one of the season.. so don't miss it !
District 7
Bracebridge, Hunstville, Gravenhurst, Lake of Bays Area
Most of the trails in this area are showing open/with only a handful on limited. With temperatures dropping down this weekend and a few cms of snow expected it will make for some great riding. Due to the fact that they have snow, there are sure to be lots of events and bbqs put on by the clubs. Be sure to check out their websites to specific areas before you go ! Deerhurst Resort is ideal for those who want to sled one day, and sit in a spa the next.
District 8
Orillia, Barrie, Midland Area
While many of the areas are hurting for snow this season, they are making up for it in spirit. With the upcoming Ride for Dad, clubs have been organizing a terrific ride to raise money and awareness to prostate cancer. Even though the ride itself can not go, there will still be an event. It is going on Saturday Feb 18th starting at 10a.m at the Mariposa Best Western Inn. Riders can still register for $25. They can expect to see great guest speakers, have a hearty lunch and still win fabulous prizes all while making new friends and supporting a great cause!
District 10
Parry Sound, McKellar, Kearney Areas
Most of these places have had trails open for the majority of this year. They are in great shape considering people come from all over to ride on them. With most of these ares showing open, and a few on limited, it is best to check the OFSC Interactive Map Guide before you go. These trails have fabulous day rides, overnight stays and you are sure to find wildlife on the trails in the deep forest trails in these areas.
District 11
North Bay, Sudbury, Powassan, French River Areas
An ideal place to head to this weekend if it is an organized ride you're after. Even if you are feeling lucky, you can always try your hand at Poker as the Sudbury Poker Derby is being held. Put on in association with Snow Goer Canada Magazine and Snowmobiler TV there are tons of prizes to be won and beautiful trails to be ridden. If not, try your luck on your own by traveling to all of these green (open) trail networks around the area. You're sure to find something to crave that snowmobiler-itis!
District 14, 15, 17 (Northern Ontario)
From Timmins, Kapuskasing, Hearst, Sioux Lookout to Dryden
If you are ready to ditch work and make the big commitment to snowmobiling this winter with idealistic trails that only a handful of people travel too, here is your destination. With open trails as far as the eye can see and more snow then the GTA has seen in a few years, these destinations are sure to put your trail permit to good use. Make sure to stop at the great place on Sioux Lookout. The Ojibway Power Tobbagan Association is also hosting a family day ride, so be sure to check it out!
