My Fly-in Fishing Honeymoon
Fly-in Fishing Trip to a Luxury Lodge in the Wilderness
I got married in the beginning of August and later that month I flew into Guardian Eagle Lodge, a luxury fly-in fishing resort north of Sioux Lookout. I have to say, I've had people say "You went fishing for you're honeymoon?". Yes, I did and it was amazing. We drove to Sioux Lookout where we got on a small plane and were flown to Guardian Eagle Lodge where they have their own runway. The runway is used by many Americans who fly up to the Fly-in Resort which is only a 2 hour flight from Minneapolis or 3 hours from Chicago. We flew by float plane right to the docks of the luxury lodge on DeLesseps Lake.
As soon as we disembarked from the plane we were treated like royalty. Our luggage was quickly and quietly took out of the plane and right into our cabin. We headed up to the main lodge for a drink. After settling in we headed out for a quick walk around the lodge before dinner. We were treated to a wonderful, succulent dinner. It's hard to believe at a fly-in resort in the middle of the bush, you could get a 5-star meal. After dinner we headed out on the lake for a bit of fishing before the sun set. It was an exceptional boat ride; we didn't see another boat the whole time and we caught plenty of fish. My husband, the non-fisherman of us two, caught the first fish and was hooked after that. We caught walleye after walleye. We were both grinning ear to ear as we rode back to the lodge at sunset.
The next morning we awoke and headed up to the main lodge for breakfast. Breakfast was out of this world. We had Creme Brulee French Toast. It was probably the best breakfast I have ever had. The next two days were spent fishing on DeLesseps Lake and Miniss Lake, which are connected by a short river. The first day our guide stopped at a secluded spot for a delicious shore lunch. He whipped up an awesome lunch including freshly caught walleye. The afternoon was spent fishing trying to get a fish big enough to put up on the 'Big fish' board in the lodge. We were catching so many fish that nearly at all times 2 out of the three of us had a fish on our hook. Our hard work payed off and I caught a fish big enough to put my name up on the wall. The next day we had a great day of fishing as well. We stopped with a couple of other boats at a spot on the lake for a shorelunch. There were some regular customers there and they helped cook lunch and shared their walleye recipes. One with seasoning salt was my favourite.
All in all, I'd have to say we had an exceptional time. Luxury, great fishing, good company and the quiet, secluded pacefullness of the wilderness. Would I go back? In a heartbeat.
