Kyle's Musky Fishing Story

Ontario musky fishing at Pine Sunset Lodge

My Muskie Fishing Story

By Kyle Olsen

My dad, his friend Jimmy, and I just got off a 12 hour drive and arrived at Pine Sunset Lodge.

The boat got pretty dirty from some of the gravel roads we had to take to get there. So dad had me do a quick wash on the boat. After that I asked if I could fish of the dock to see if I could catch some small pike.

He said, "Go right ahead." So I did.

A PWT pro John Kolinski came fishing with me on the dock. He used a top water bass bait, and on his third cast a huge swell took his bait. He barely even got to set the hook and it was a clean cut off. That is when I just got down there. He left to retie.

I made one cast got nothing, made another one and felt a tug on my line. I set the hook and it didn't feel like a fish it felt like I was dragging a big log or something.

When it got up to the dock I was screaming, "Get the net!" For it was a monster. It was swimming next to the dock like it wasn't even hooked. It was barely fighting. That's when a man named Terry came down to the dock to see what I had on. As soon as he saw what was on my line he was screaming at them to bring the net down here now.

Then it started to fight a little bit. It was heading out for the open water. That's when dad got down there with the net. It was taking out the line fast.

Then it did an amazing tail walk. It just pushed its self out of the water. That was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen!

It came back to the dock and dad netted it. It had the lure buried in its mouth. It even had the 8in. leader in its mouth. Its huge teeth were just scratching the line.

It was so heavy that I couldn't lift it so dad had to lift it for me. We never measured it because we wanted to let it go so it could live. It was the biggest muskie I'd ever seen.

I was using 6lb fire line, a Meps Comet, and a medium action walleye rod.

Later that night there was another muskie sitting right by the dock on the surface. It looked even bigger than the last one. I hooked him and with a few shakes of his head I lost him.

A few casts later I lost my Comet to a snag. So I used an Erie Dearie and had one about thirty inches long follow up. Later the mosquitoes got bad so I had to leave and go into the cabin. I never caught another muskie that trip but once in the boat I had one eat my walleye.

Another Year, The Fishing Story Continues!

The next year I was fishing up there again this time I came prepared a little better. I still used my Meps Comet. I was fishing in the evening again and down on the steep bank by a bull rush, it was there, I had another big fish on! I had 20lb test on and this fish was stripping out line! But I lost him.

Later that trip we were pre fishing for my dad's tournament and our friend fishing with us had a 50" plus muskie follow up. We were fishing a rocky island with some weeds when he followed up.

Later we fished a different island with the same type of condition as the last one rocky and weedy. We were jig fishing it with Berkley Gulp and one time I lifted up and hooked into something. It was like a 60" muskie. I mean the thing was absolutely gigantic. It was barley even hooked on the side of the mouth! With one shake of his head I lost him.

My stay at Pine Sunset Lodge was great. They have fish fries (they are great). They tell you where the fish are biting they tell you how they're biting. The best part is the fishing, it is great! There are many walleyes and pike just off the docks.

The best part of fishing there is you might hook into a huge muskie while fishing for walleyes.
