Red Lake Beautifying Itself Through Art
The My Red Lake Community Mural Initiative Depicts Life in Red Lake
In the summer of 2011, Red Lake came alive through youth-created murals and art. The My Red Lake Community Mural Initiative involves three groups of youth, ages 8 to 29, who are being led through the mural creation process by experienced artists. In the photo above, a group of youth are working with lead artist, Rhonda Bobinski, to design and paint a WILD themed mural. This mural is being painted in studio and will be hung on the Treasure House building on Howey Street upon completion. The theme for the mural is "wild" to reflect the wilderness, "wild" artist creativity, and the perception that teenagers are "wild".
Cheryl Wilson Smith and her group of 8 to 13 year olds are altering the landscape of Howey Street, as they paint their depictions of life in Red Lake. This project was sponsored by the Ontario Arts Council, the Chukuni Communities Development Corporation and the Red Lake District Chamber of Commerce. Another mural on the Red Lake Travel building on Howey Street is lead by artist, Christine Brown. Her group of young mural artists created a very colourful background for their 'My Red Lake' inspired mural.
In addition to the murals around Red Lake, area businesses sponsored street banners, featuring local photography, to improve the aesthetics of Howey Street in Red Lake. As you walk or drive through the town, you'll see many awe-inspiring photos on the light stands.
