With an emphasis on independent filmmakers, both short and feature length films are screened over the five days at Finlandia Club on Bay St., the main venue for this popular culture event now in it's 11 year in Thunder Bay. The films shown at the festival are from around the world with a preference to Canadian productions and those from Thunder Bay and Northwest Ontario. The types of films range from comedy, romance, drama, documentaries, animation and experimental works.
The festival kicks off with a Gala on the Wednesday evening from 8 pm to midnight at the Finlandia Club above the famous Hoito restaurant on Bay Street. You can take free master classes where you will meet visiting filmmakers from around the world.
There will be an outdoor screening at a special Movies in Park event at Prince Arthur’s Landing. This year the festival is once again offering a Hatch a Film Contest where filmmakers can pitch (offer a synopsis of a film idea) to an industry jury to win a $2,000 cash prize and $5,000 worth of in-kind services from a film company. This is only for residents of Thunder Bay. Information can be found on Bay Street Film Festival website.
