Fun for Everyone

Fishing may be #1 but there's lots of things to do at resorts and lodges

Not everyone likes to fish and that's ok! Lodge and cottage resort owners in Algoma Country take great pride in offering a variety of outdoor activities to every type of guest to ensure that everyone has fun and has the best vacation possible.

Below are 10 Activities to do besides fishing

1. Sunbathe and Swim

Stretch out on a lounger or blanket and bask in the warmth of the sun, then cool off in the crystal clear lake; perfect if you're looking to relax at a resort. Many resorts have sandy beaches or grassy manicured lawns, and some offer water sports equipment (tubes, water bikes, or paddleboards, waterslides and floating docks). Looking for a secluded spot? Often there are sandy spots on other parts of the lake. Talk to staff about secret spots.

Other Amenities: some resorts may offer outdoor hot tubs and saunas

2. Kayaking and Canoeing

You can enjoy the serene and calm waters on the lake and take in the beautiful wilderness from the water with self-guided, or even guided paddling day trips. Explore islands with secluded sandy beaches and spots to picnic, swim, and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Many resorts and lodges offer complimentary kayaks and canoes.

3. Lawn games: Horseshoes, Washer Toss, Bocci

Classic lawn games are always fun whether you bring your own games, or the resorts provide the horseshoe pits. This is a great way to not only spend time with friends and family, meet and make new friends with fellow guests. Often, resorts will have indoor game rooms that are the perfect way to spend a rainy day during your stay.

4. Photography or Painting

You are surrounded by magnificent landscapes, wildlife, foliage and opportunities to view breathtaking sunsets and glorious morning sunrises. The countless opportunities will inspire your photography, or channel the Group of Seven and enjoy some En Plein Air sessions. Not sure what to pack in your painting kit?

There's nothing else to be said about relaxing, putting away technology and enjoying a good book(s).

6. Hiking and Trails

If you're staying at a drive-in cottage, take day trips into the many provincial parks or the Chapleau Crown Preserve. This is a beautiful time for hiking in the fall as the leaves turn into spectacular fall colours of red, orange and yellow. Some resorts offer interpretive nature walks.

9. Ride Your Bicycle

Take your bicycle to explore the scenic country roads throughout Algoma Country. Cycling is a fun way to explore the area to attractions, festivals and events, or just enjoy the fresh clean country air. One of Algoma's hidden gems for cycling is St. Joseph Island. If trail riding with mountain bikes is more of what you're looking for, there are designated trail systems in Algoma that have skill levels for everyone. In winter, bring your fat bike!

If you've never stayed at a lodge or cottage resort before, here are a few things to know:

Cottage Resorts and Lodges: offer plans of varying price points and amenities. Cabins/cottages come fully furnished including a kitchen with everything you need for your stay: cutlery, dishes, pots and pans, appliances, and often, bed linens (this varies from property to property). Packages can be from a few days stay to a week-long stay. Many packages include: boat/motor/fuel, some offer maid service, guide services, complimentary kayaks or canoes to guests, and some resorts have weekly fish fries that all guests can enjoy.

American Plan Packages: Similar packages at a cottage resort but you enjoy homecooked meals prepared by a chef in the dining room of the main lodge on a meal plan.

When Planning: be sure to read all the package details on lodge and resort websites and call the owners and staff with your questions.
