Must-Do Events This Summer

Editor's Note: The following events took place in 2017 during Canada's 150th birthday celebrations. Regular Canada Celebrations take place annually on July 1.

There are lots to celebrate in Canada this year as Canada marks its 150th birthday! As part of the festivities, communities across Ontario are putting on special events and hosting their regular Canada Day events. Below is a list of special 150 events and Canada Day celebrations taking place in Algoma that you won’t want to miss!


“Come Home”
June 30 – July 2, 2017

This big event is taking place in Bruce Mines, Johnson Township and Township of Plummer Additional. There will be an Old Fashioned Carnival with Games, music, concerts, the Bruce Mines Public School Reunion, guided & self-guided tours (walking, hiking, biking), historical tour and attractions, a waterfront paddle poker run, fireworks show, Apres Party (Dance & Buffet), food booths, BBQ, pancake breakfast and so much more!

Voyageur Brigade
June 29 – July 4, 2017

Celebrate Canada’s 150 with the most iconic mode of transportation in our nation’s history: the canoe! The Sault Ste. Marie Brigade plans to paddle from Batchawana Bay to Thessalon via Fort St. Joseph on St. Joseph Island. Be on the lookout as the Brigade paddles from Lake Superior to Lake Huron!

History Fest and Canada Day: A 150 Celebration
July 1, 2017

This event is hosted by the Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site in Sault Ste. Marie Re-enactors will bring this historic site to life during the Nation’s sesquicentennial.

Parade of Paddles
July 1, 2017

The Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site and Lock invites you to the Parade of Paddles. The colourful parade will enter the canal, then continue down the waterfront to the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Museum and the Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site. Spectators will enjoy free activities and presentations at the Lock.

Voyageurs' Musicfest
July 1, 2017

Traditionally held the Civic Long Weekend, this year, in celebration of Canada's 150th Birthday, the Musicfest will be held July 1! Don't miss the biggest show on the shores of Lake Superior.

Wawa Goose Unveiling
July 1, 2017

The new Wawa Goose Monument will be unveiled to the public on Canada’s Birthday! This is a weekend full of activities plus the Wawa Musicfest.

Fort St. Joseph Rendezvous 150
July 3, 2017

Experience the once vibrant community of Fort St. Joseph. The brigade of voyageur canoes will land in the morning signalling the start of the event. There will be Indigenous, military and pioneer history and culture featured during this day of celebration and re-enactment. There will be a blacksmith demonstration, 1812-era medical equipment, learn traditional dances and games, listen to traditional music by Algoma Trad and more.
Admission: $5, free for children 12 and under

Innovation 150
July 5, 2017

In celebration of Canada’s 150th, the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre and Entomica present the Actua Maker Mobile. This moving maker space will include 3D printers, a laser cutter, programmable circuit boards, and so much more! Participants can create their innovations in a hands-on learning environment. You’ll also discover the fascinating hidden world of insects thanks to interesting interactive exhibits with Entomica, and the Bushplane Museum’s interactive Northern Nature Trading Experience.

Blind River – Blazing the Trail for Canada’s 150
July 8, 2017

The Annual Community Day Parade is held the second weekend of July this year. This year’s theme celebrates Canada’s 150th Birthday. Come out to celebrate the town’s heritage.
Parade Begins: 12:15 pm


Don't forget! Use this free pass to get into all of Canada’s National Parks, National Marine Conservation Areas and National Historic Sites across the country. You can use this pass in Algoma Country at Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site, Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site and Pukaskwa National Park.
