The Mill Market

In 2015 The Mill Market Celebrated it's First Anniversary

Fresh food, culinary, and craft for the everyday and the extraordinary.

Editor's Note: In 2015, Mill Market celebrated its one-year anniversary. Since its opening on the Sault Ste. Marie waterfront, the Mill Market continues to host a wealth of local vendors selling a variety of locally grown, produced and handmade products. Please note that some vendors listed in this article may no longer be selling at Mill Market. Visit www.millmarketssm.ca or follow on Facebook for up-to-date information on market days, times and vendors.

A year ago, Mill Market opened its doors to the community showcasing Northern Ontario vendors such as farmers, ranchers, fishermen and artisans from the Algoma Region and beyond. I have had the privilege and the pleasure of documenting a year in photographs for Mill Market, Sault Ste. Marie's newest all-year-round market. Mill Market is celebrating its one-year anniversary in June 2015. Mill Market is located at 35 Canal Drive. The location was once the Municipal Fish Hatchery across from the Clergue Generating Station -- situated near the Sault Locks. You can also access Mill Market along the John Rowswell Hub Trail. It is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The Mill Market has everything from food, clothing, crafting, artwork, and entertainment and has hosted various events over the past year. The food is amazing. A trip down to the Mill Market can garner fresh white fish from Agawa Fisheries, homemade perogies and cabbage rolls from The Croatian Corner, fresh vegetables, and fresh bread from Stillcroft Farm and Bakehouse. Tuomo's Stubbornly Finnish Foods sells traditional pulla, voi-pulla buns, sugar pulla and rye bread. Beautiful meat cuts are sold by Sunnynook Farms, Penokean Hills, and Collholm Farm.

Lunch or dinner wouldn't be complete without amazing desserts from Mill Market. Petit Gateau specializes in cakes, Latin American baking and gluten and sugar free desserts. Dolce Paula's Pastries are delicious. You can purchase cinnamon buns, assorted cookies, bread, scones, gluten-free products, pastries and amazing crepes that are cooked on the spot for your immediate eating pleasure. The Queen's Tarts has a wonderful selection of tarts and pies. If you love cupcakes, Chiclet Cupcakes is for you. Ice cream scooped by young entrepreneurs Lily and Claudia's is a must-try.

If you want to eat on the spot, you can order right at Mill Market from the two food trucks on the location: The Gnarly Bistro and HolleyDe's Fish and Chips. To complement your own home cooking, you can spice it up with maple syrup from Mountain Maple Products, herbs from Earthy Delights, and jams and herbs from Twisting Roots Homestead. Wonderful beverages both hot and cold are available. Juicy Beets has delicious and nutritious juices and hot beverages. St. Joseph Island Coffee Roasters is brewing and desserts are calling at Café Natura. Northern Twisted Pizza can be purchased by the slice.

The Mill Market has many other very interesting vendors besides foods. Décor for the home can be purchased from White Picket Fence. Adept Designs specializes in leather work and knitted items. Besides being the Mill Market Photographer, I have done some shows at Mill Market and will continue to sell Sheri Minardi Photography at the Mill Market a few times over the year.

Meadowview Alpaca Farm and Fiber Studio have hand-knitted alpaca socks, shawls and hats. The alpacas even make visits to Mill Market every once in a while.

Mill Market showcases talented entertainers and community groups. Just a few examples are Alex Walker and Isaac Provenzano who love to play their guitars while you shop. Over the winter, the skating rink was open for outdoor enthusiasts who skate. The Metis Nation of Sault Ste. Marie entertained us with music and dancing and Frank Deresti and The Lake Effect provided music for the Etsy Made in Canada event. Our gold medalist Olympians in curling and skiing visited Mill Market along with various other celebrities throughout the year.

Special events are held at Mill Market. This year, the Bon Soo Winter Carnival was held at Mill Market. A Kids' Camp was held over the March Break where students learned about various scientific things, did crafts and Yoga. Etsy had a shop Etsy Made in Canada Night which showcased local vendors who sell on Etsy.
