100% vegan restaurant attracts diners in downtown Sault Ste. Marie

With fresh, housemade offerings (homemade cinnamon buns anyone?) the Soo's latest downtown spot is a must-try. No animals were harmed in the making of this menu!

Since its opening downtown in the summer of 2021, Plant 2 Plate restaurant has quickly become Sault Ste. Marie’s most popular 100% vegan restaurant. Luke Couturier, along with his partner Daniel, had an opportunity to open the March Street spot in the space previously known as Vibe Eatery.

“When Vibe closed, I went looking for other job opportunities in the area,” said Luke. But when the previous owner asked if he was interested in purchasing the place, he and Daniel jumped at the chance. “We knew Vibe already had a great customer base and following," he says. "We just made a few changes and updated the menu to strictly vegan and we’ve been happy that the reception from our customers has been much higher than expected. We are very thankful for that.”

The restaurant, which offers a selection of breakfast options, as well as soups, wraps, poutine, bowls, and burgers, attracts a lot of people looking for strictly plant-based food, Luke explains. Its vegan menu offers dishes free of meat, dairy, honey, and animal products, making it a safe space for vegan diets.

A graduate of Sault College’s Culinary Arts and Chef Training program, Luke worked for several years in various restaurants in the Sault and other parts of Canada. He also earned his Red Seal in advanced chef skills, while apprenticing with a master chef. He is responsible for the kitchen and the back of the house while Daniel does the business end of things and oversees the front of the house.

The menu is diverse and creative, with much of the produce and herbs grown on their property. They also offer cold-pressed juices, house-made sodas and smoothies, as well as homemade preserves and fermented products. The restaurant also sources from local producers including Thomson Farms Cider & Winery, Findlay’s Fungus, Hogan’s Homestead, and St. Joseph Island Coffee Roasters.

"Daily, we make our own bread, English muffins, cupcakes, muffins, cinnamon buns, and energy bites, all made from scratch. Half the choices offered are gluten-free. You’ll notice on our menu on the chalkboard and online menu there’s a “Nice Side” and a “Naughty Side” in order to appeal to all tastes and cravings. Our customers love it.” On the breakfast menu, along with a lunch menu, there are items like Cinnamon Bun French Toast, "Eggs" and Cheese Sandwich or for lunch, Soup of the Day, a pulled "pork" sandwich or a "chicken" burger, substituting the meat for mushrooms or tofu.

Some of their most popular items, according to Luke, are the “chicken” bites (made from lion’s mane mushrooms), the poutine, and the "chicken" bowl. You can find the full menu here or by scanning the QR Code on the signage at the store.

“We decided to use the quick-serve method of serving our customers, where they put in their order at the counter and when the order is ready, it’s served in biodegradable cardboard take-out containers. That way, customers can take their food with them if they want to eat on the run, or they’re welcome to have a leisurely meal inside the restaurant at one of the tables,” says Luke.

A notable welcoming policy of Plant 2 Plate, is that it’s a safe space for members of the LGBTQ community.

I was so impressed with Luke and his Plant 2 Plate menu, that we plan to be regular customers. The food is that delicious! Give it a try!
