Beaverland Bass on Marten River

Come back to nature at this scenic riverside camp.

Bass fishing in the beautiful Marten River district of Northeastern Ontario can produce some of the most scenic wilderness surroundings and easily some of the most colourful smallmouth bass I have ever caught.

On an early autumn trip to Beaverland Camp located on the river, we experienced some unexpected weather fronts that gave the bass a slight case of lockjaw but with the sheer amount of natural fishable locations on this four-lake system, we made sweet lemonade from sour weather lemons and enjoyed a relaxing adventurous mini vacation not far from the GTA.

Beaverland Camp was built in the early 1900s and became a fishing lodge in 1926. All the cottages range from the original log cabins to modern ones. Whether you are coming to fish, boat, canoe, or rest in the cool, quiet shade, you are cordially invited to enjoy the entertainment nature so abundantly supplies at Beaverland Camp. Creature comforts have been added to make your getaway as comfortable as possible, while still embracing the "come back to nature" atmosphere, which is the essence of our operation.

This camp feels so comfortable and is a classic example of how a traditional Ontario fishing camp should look.

We loved it.

We fished a variety of locations from deeper rock shoals, reefs and bars to extended island points and mid-depth flats in search of the popular smallmouth bass that inhabits this system. Walleye and northern pike are very popular and sought-after species while visiting this camp, guests we spoke with return every season with tales of good catches of walleye, pike and bass every year.

With the trolling motor on high, we fished for roaming bass with loud noisy topwater baits and were fortunate to connect with some of the beautiful chocolate brown bass from the river. For variety's sake, we also fished the deeper reefs with drop shots and Ned rigs connecting with countless numbers of spunky bass that were everywhere on our electronics. The shallower lily pad-infested bays also held some nice bass on the outer edges with jerk baits and flashy spinnerbaits.

Beaverland Camp is pleased to offer twenty, clean affordable housekeeping (efficiency) cottages in a family-friendly atmosphere. Enjoy the well-treed pesticide-free greenspace, sandy beach and quiet hiking trails.

They welcome families to enjoy a summer holiday, with a safe and private sandy beach, endless ribbons of trail to explore by foot or wheel, and hunting territories within a ten-minute walk. This Heritage Resort is located in the heart of Ontario’s Near North, not too far from the convenience of the city, yet close to nature in the Nipissing Crown Game Preserve. Neighbour to Temagami, the home of Grey Owl.

About Karl Kalonka

It's possible Karl's love for fishing began as early as the age of five. His parents took the kids on weekend trips across Ontario fishing for panfish, catfish, and bass. "I started with a bobber and worm from the time I was five years old," says Karl. These days, he has the enviable task of doing what he loves for a living, travelling across Ontario fishing, filming and producing two outdoor series, Extreme Angler and Crappie Angler TV.
