Not much action on Lake Simcoe now that lake trout, whitefish, cisco and walleye are closed and all solid ice huts had to be off the lake March 15. Several anglers, however, still ventured out either without a hut or with their portable cloth models to enjoy some very good perch action.

Over the weekend the late ice perch bite was hot from the north end of the lake near Orillia and parts of southern end – where anglers could still find safe access. Many shorelines are beginning to break up and conditions are only expected to deteriorate despite an expected cold snap mid-week. This may allow for another weekend of sporadic ice fishing opportunities for jumbo perch near shore where conditions warrant. Typically late season ice is when big females move in to stage before the spawning period in early spring after ice out. Anglers are encouraged to practice selective harvest by releasing those big jumbo perch over the magical 12 inch mark which are typically females carrying many more eggs than their smaller ‘eating sized counterparts’.

Northern Pike season remains open until the end of the month and there were a few isolated reports of 5-12 pound pike caught in Cooks Bay. Local tackle shops should be contacted for ice conditions and anglers are reminded to wear floater suits, carry ice picks, test ice as they travel and keep in mind that honey combed ice - common at this time of year is quite dangerous and must be avoided. Reading ice conditions and knowing that white ice only has half the strength of clear blue ice is important. Ice that is getting soft and near pressure cracks or river mouths should be avoided as well.
