The fishing in Northwest Ontario is spectacular, with thousands of lakes and rivers filled with trophy-sized fish. Rainy Lake has become famous for the quality of its walleye fishery, but what many do not know is how exceptional the pike and smallmouth bass fishing is.

Camp Narrows Lodge is located in the northern part of Rainy Lake, and is ideally located to have access to some of the best fly fishing on the lake. This drive-to lodge can accommodate groups from two to 14 in separate cabins that are quite spacious and luxurious. Anglers can bring their own boats or rent beautifully equipped boats from the lodge. We started fly fishing less than 100 yards from our dock and almost immediately hooked into a fine 34-inch pike on a streamer. Here the pike grow very thick rather than long. A long fish on Rainy Lake is 45 inches, but it will probably weigh well over 30 pounds. Points, weed bed edges, small bays and any fallen timber seemed to hold good populations of healthy pike which are very strong given the cold water conditions.

For smallmouth bass fly fishing, this is heaven, with the northern part of lake dotted with hundreds of small islands and reefs which are magnets for bass. Topwater action is usually outstanding with many 18-22 inch fish caught using yellow, white and black poppers. If the fish are a bit sullen in the early morning, we found BH woolly buggers in purple, brown and black worked very well on an intermediate fly line. Camp Narrows Lodge is the perfect place for anglers who want outstanding fishing that is both affordable and accessible.
