One of the best kept secrets in Northern Ontario is Lake Nipigon. This giant lake is deep, ice cold and possesses some of the biggest Pike to be had. The lake is known for pike, walleye, lake trout and coaster brook trout. Most of the lake is designated as “protected” which means this drive-to lake has no cottages or lodges on it. However, this is one fishing resort, which has access to this great lake through a river – Onaman River Resort. The resort features beautifully appointed cabins which can host groups from 2-8 anglers at a time. They have nicely equipped boats to rent but you can also bring your own. When we fished there is June, we caught massive numbers of large pike and walleye on a fly. This was literally 200 yards from the river mouth. The fishing remains excellent all season because the waters are so cold throughout the summer. Anglers can use both flies and lures to catch good numbers of fish. Most popular flies for the pike and walleye were Murdich Minnow in white, green and black. For the coaster brook trout, white streamers 4-5 inches long are ideal. Onaman River Resort is the perfect place for anglers who want outstanding fishing that is both affordable and accessible.
