Fly Fishing Ontario

If anyone can teach The Planet D to fly fish, it's Bill Spicer from The New Fly Fisher TV Show.

Editor's Note: This article was first published in the Spring of 2014. Bloggers Dave and Deb explored everything Northern Ontario had to offer from fly fishing to motorcycle touring, hiking and paddling.

Celebrity travel bloggers Dave & Deb (The Planet D) bring the attention of their huge international audience to Northern Ontario this week when they arrive in Sault Ste. Marie for what, frankly, sounds like an absolutely ideal fly fishing adventure. This travelling duo, married 16 years, have visited over 80 countries since giving up workaholic schedules in 2008 to become full-time adventure travellers (nice work if you can get it, eh? Watch the video below to see how they did it -- hint: they don't have a house!)

Dave and Deb have kayaked with crocodiles in South Africa, sampled whale meat in Greenland, and learned to motorcycle Ontario-style -- to name just a few adventures-- but they are new to the romance and raw beauty of fly fishing. Can an expert angler on the level of Bill Spicer teach two newbies how to fish for the big brookies? How will fly fishing Canadian-style stack up against, for example, playing electric guitar with a Great White Shark?

A Fishing Trip Itinerary for World Travelers

The task of putting together the perfect Canadian fly fishing adventure fell to tourism veteran Carol Caputo, Executive Director at Ontario's Algoma Country Tourism. Carol wanted a tour that could show off in just one week the best that Ontario fly fishing could offer, while at the same time being practical and affordable.

Day 1 (Tuesday, June 24th): Fishing the Soo
Carol put The Planet D in touch with The New Fly Fisher TV Show, who invited them on-air for a crash-course fly fishing lesson with Bill Spicer. The location? The legendary rapids beneath the International Bridge on the St. Marys River. In 1920, Ernest Hemingway said it was the best fly fishing spot in the world. Will it impress the newbies? They'll be staying at the Delta Waterfront Hotel -- all the urban amenities and yet walking distance to the rapids. That'll help.

Day 2 (Wednesday, June 25th): White River
A few last early morning casts into St. Marys before Dave and Deb get on board a floatplane and head North. . .to White River!

Day 3-5 (June 26th to 28th): Timberwolf Lodge
After a night at the White River Motel, Dave and Deb will keep driving north, to Hornepayne, where they will catch a floatplane out to stunning Timberwolf Lodge on Nagagami Lake. They will fish at the lodge until Sunday before departing by plane.
