Belle Chasse Outfitters is located close to the small town of Longlac, Ontario, which is a rural part of Northern Ontario’s Superior Country off the most northern highway that passes through the province. A scenic five-hour drive from the Canadian border gets you to Belle Chasse’s doorstep, a remote drive-to destination with secluded pristine beauty and endless adventures.
One of Mark and Hartley’s ultimate goals is to be able to watch their clients hopes and dreams come true. If there is something you want to do, they will do what they can to make it possible. Whether it’s tagging a trophy Black Bear, taking a guided trip on McKay Lake for Trophy Walleye, Lake Trout or Pike, fishing on a lake down the road from the lodge for Splake, or experiencing Walleye and Pike on one of the many lakes Belle Chasse is nestled on. They strive to keep you happy with very comfortable accommodations, which include six cabins that sleep between two to six people each with kitchenettes and half baths. The super unique main lodge, with a cool layout, has a living space, kitchen and dining area as well as multiple showers in individual rooms.
Belle Chasse has one of the largest black bear management areas in Northern Ontario, with a massive 171 square miles allowing them to properly manage the bear population and harvest some of the largest bears in Ontario each year, with multiple trophy bear being taken over 350 plus pounds every year. Belle Chasse offers both spring and fall bear hunts with over 90 bear sites, so you’re guaranteed to be the only hunter on your hunting site for that season. Not only that, Mark and Hartley have a very knowledgeable hunting guide on staff who is sure to get you on multiple big bear opportunities. Belle Chasse Outfitters offers fully guide and semi-guided hunts to suit whatever your hunting needs may be. The guide does all the baiting, drops you off and picks you up from your stand or blind. The most important goal at Belle Chasse Outfitters is giving their guests the best opportunity to have a hunt of a lifetime with lots of opportunities to tag a bear of a lifetime.
My trip was nothing short of spectacular. My guide, Bunny, showed us trail cam pictures that he had of multiple bears coming in at all times of the day. During my trip I had seven bears within eyesight. During my last sit I actually had three bear coming and going at the same time, with the big ol’ boy coming in and putting the run on the two smaller bear. Once that big bear came walking in, there was no question he was the dandy I was looking for. Putting my Raven crossbow scope crosshairs on his front shoulder waiting for him to take his final step, ending in a clean shot and hearing him fall to his end just 10 yards from the bait barrel was something I will never forget. It definitely topped off my first ever unforgettable Ontario Spring Bear hunt.
A nice thing about putting trail cameras on bear sites, you can target exactly when they are hitting the bait. Given that, it allows you to get in a boat in the morning or evening depending on bear activity and pursue a number of fish species on a number of Belle Chasse’s many lakes. There are seven different lakes accessible by boat from the lodge and lakes literally everywhere drivable within minutes of the lodge. In total, there are about 15 amazing lakes that guests take advantage of regularly. I was able to fish a different lake every day and go after everything from walleye, lake trout, pike and even splake!
The fishing was lights out wherever we went. Even a cold front wasn’t enough to slow the amazing walleye action. Although the temperature dropped from 82 to 32 degrees, pitching and slow rolling jigs and plastics or hair jigs was the ticket to enticing those lethargic walleyes.
The lodge was previously owned by Wayne and Donna Bosowicz for over 30 years. They were the first to run bear hunts out of the lodge. Wayne is still known by many in the area as the one who made bear hunting popular again in the region. The lodge was then vacant for a number of years prior to Mark and Hartley purchasing it. Since taking over, they have upgraded the lodge in a number of ways. One being tearing down the old lodge and building a new main lodge. Many of the old windows, boards and logs were used in the construction of the new lodge to keep its rustic feel.
Why is their lodge unique? First, it was built around a transport truck that they pulled in and dropped down and used for the shower and kitchen portion of the structure. They also renovated the six individual cabins one by one, bringing them all up to date.
Belle Chasse Outfitters offers an opportunity to fish multiple lakes for multi-species fishing action. If you are looking for your next fishing adventure, as well as a spring or fall trophy bear hunting destination, Belle Chasse Outfitters should be #1 on your list. There is no question I’m going back to the place that means “Beautiful Hunt”!!
