4 Amazing Ways to Experience Fall in Northeastern Ontario

Now that fall has officially begun, vibrant gold, red, and rust coloured leaves are quickly beginning to sweep over the Northeastern Ontario landscape. Welcome to the days of sweater weather, pumpkin spice everything, and crisp, cool mornings. And, it's worth mentioning, almost no bugs!

Take a break from the ordinary and instead of just viewing the colours through your window, try one of these unique ways to experience fall to the fullest in Northeastern Ontario.

On the Trails

Whether you’re looking for a simple hike or a more adventurous one, A.Y. Jackson Lookout offers three trail options for different skill levels. You don’t need to go far from the trailhead to find a stunning view of scenic Onaping High Falls which cascades 55 m into the Sudbury Basin.

In the Air

If you’re looking for a truly unique way to enjoy fall, what better way to get a sweeping view of the fall colours than from the air? Enjoy a fly-in fall experience can be found at Sudbury Aviation, which offers wildlife watching at one of their outpost camps. Enjoy your tree-top view of the colours below on your way to your camp where you can spend a week paddling, boating, and warming up around a campfire in the evenings.

If you catch the flying bug and decide you’d like to give it a go behind the controls, both Central North Airways and Sudbury Aviation offer flight training to help you get your pilot’s license!

On the Water

Pack some of those classic, cozy fall outfits and set your sights on Killarney, arguably one of the most beautiful places to view fall colours. Call ahead to Killarney Mountain Lodge to book a serene Georgian Bay experience aboard one of their many boats. Guests staying at the lodge also have complimentary access to canoes and kayaks–all launched easily from the lodge's private sandy beach. 

Whether you’re taking a motor cruise to Baie Fine or sailing to the Fox Islands, the warm colours of the changing leaves set against the vibrant blue waters of Georgian Bay are sure to take your breath away. Remember to pack your camera to capture some stunning shots to show off when you get home!

On Horseback

Head to Mattawa Voyageur Country and Von Doeler’s Ranch for an exciting trail ride on horseback. Choose from four rides through a variety of woodland trails and beautiful backdrops, ranging from 1 to 3 hours in length.

Try the Talon Chutes Ride, which will take you down to Talon Chutes while you leisurely weave your way through colourful tree-lined trails. It’s a great option for all levels of riders. The ride also includes a 15-minute stop to get up and stretch your legs and take in the beautiful rushing waterfalls, as well as an optional tour of the area before heading back up the trails. This ride is approximately 2 hours in length.
