The Canadian Mom Blog visits Science North

Science North is Sudbury’s number one play-all-day attraction. With a 4 level science center, multiple theaters, and fun filled exhibits, it’s a must see for any guest or resident of Sudbury. Located on beautiful the Ramsey Lake, it offers both indoor and outdoor entertainment.

Safely discover Ontario when the time is right. For the most up-to-date information on where and when it is safe to travel please visit: covid-19.ontario.ca.

Do your part by following public health advice. It is important to wear a face mask or covering, practice physical distancing, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Four- Level Science Center

Level ONE consists of the TD Bank Toddler Treehouse, a fun activity room geared toward younger guests. Build something with blocks, play pretend on a giant ship, or hunker down in the comfy treehouse with a book!

Level TWO is a combination of creepy crawlers and ancient artifacts. In one area you can examine fossils and learn about the various eras - along with the creatures that lived during them, or explore assorted prehistoric skeletons. On the other side, learn about numerous different bug, arachnid, and beetle species, and their habitats. If you’re feeling adventurous, many of them can be brought out and held! This floor also houses the Butterfly Gallery and Room. Step into the ideal butterfly habitat and experience an up close and personal look at a variety of beautiful butterflies, as they fly, feed, and exist just like they would in the wild. Lastly, the second floor hosts the Nature Exchange, a program that allow guests to submit interesting naturally occurring items in exchange for points. Those points can then be used to “purchase” new and exciting items from the science center. Fossils, shells, and special rocks are just a few items you can submit for trade, but the Bluecoats (aka Science North Staff) love a unique find, so feel free to get creative!

The THIRD level is focused on northern ecosystems and the animals that inhabit them. Visit with a beaver, turtles, fish, snakes, and many other species, while learning about their impact on the environment around us. This floor also offers a bird watching station, complete with high-grade stationary binoculars, and a gigantic adjustable moose antler that makes the perfect photo op.

Finally, the FOURTH floor offers an encompassing look at human anatomy and biology, numerous technological concepts, and all things outer space. In the biology section you can perform various physical tests to discover interesting statistics about yourself, learn about the innermost workings of the human body, and even lay down on a bed of nails. This floor also hosts the Gyroscope, a space simulator that allows you to experience what an astronaut feels during times of weightlessness in space. Whether you build a Kinex car to race, try out a robot arm, or explore the numerous space and technology themed activities, it’s sure to be a blast!

Theaters, Caverns, and the Special Exhibitions Hall

Science North houses 3 different theaters for entertaining and educating its guests. Most notably is the IMAX(R) Theater, with an impressive screen that’s 5 storeys high and 7 storeys wide paired with 12000 watt speakers. The IMAX offers both traditional new releases and educational documentaries, as well as 2D and 3D experiences.

You can also catch a live science or animal demo in the discovery theater, test your senses in the object theater, or head to the Vale Cavern for a 4D big screen adventure that’s sure to blow you away.

One of the best features about Science North is their ever-changing, exciting specialty exhibits, found in the 6000 square-foot Exhibitions Hall. These are comprehensive walk through displays that include informative visuals, as well as interactive and fun-filled exercises for guests of all ages.

Eating and Shopping

Shopping at Science North is a total treat thanks to Whizards Gift Shop. It’s chock-full of fun and educational toys, and games, for kids of all ages. Even the adults can find something exciting to bring home.

They also offers 2 different venues for food. Elements is a cafeteria style eatery with healthy options and a gorgeous view of the lake from either inside or out on the patio. The Dr Pepper Express is the perfect place to grab some quick snacks and is conveniently located right outside the IMAX theater. Alternatively, you can pack your own lunch and grab a table in the open concept, general dining area. Lockers are available in the coatroom so you don’t need to worry about lugging it around all day either.

After spending the day exploring inside, you can head out for a walk on the beautiful boardwalk along the lake or stroll through the Northern Forest, an outdoor space next to the parking lot. The possibilities are endless when you spend the day at Science North. For hours of operation, ticket prices, and a full list of available attractions, check out their website.
