Doing Good for Others in Dryden

Paying it Forward in Dryden

Pay It Forward an Example for Everyone

Nice story about kindness and a community rallying around the concept of doing good for others.

You'll never guess what one girl is getting for her graduation!

Update: Check out the bottom of the article for a photo of Alexzandria on her grad night. So beautiful! Thanks again to everyone involved.

These past couple of weeks something special has been happening in Dryden, Ontario. What started out as a kind gesture by one business ended up being a whole community coming together to make one individual's grad night something spectacular.

It all started with this note...

Anonymous donor gives away 4 tiresAnonymous donor gives away 4 tires

Pat Pearson of First Impression came across a note online where a good samaritan paid for tires for someone in need. It inspired her to do something nice for someone. She decided to donate a dress of up to $350 in value to a graduating high school or grade eight girl who would benefit from and deserve a dress of her dreams. She asked that people nominate someone, jot down a small write up telling her why the girl deserves to have a beautiful dress, especially one that she normally could not afford. Nominations were open until May 23 at 11:00, when they were to pick the winner. The winner would be announced on CKDR sometime after 1:00pm that day.

But that was just the beginning...

The first nomination came shortly thereafter. Then local TV celebrity Marc NcNay of The Real Deal with Marc dropped in to First Impression to donate $50 to go towards some of the gorgeous jewellery sold in the store. Then, the newly opened Sew Many Things on King Street offered free alterations on the dress if needed. Serena McDonald from Body Works Esthetics Studio was next, offering a free manicure or make-up to our winner!

The next day even more businesses came forward. Sue Vaccher from Shoppers in Dryden offered a makeup application to the winner. Michelle Marie Photography offered up another perk: a 15-minute photo session.

From there, the 'Pay it Forward' movement just spiraled. More and more businesses and individuals stepped forward to donate towards making what I'm sure is to be a dream day for one deserving individual.

The lucky 'Pay it Forward' winner will receive:

  • Free grad dress up to $350 value from the First Impression
  • $50 in jewelry from Marc McNay of The Real Deal With Marc
  • Free alterations on the dress (if needed) by Sew Many Things
  • A free manicure from Body Works Esthetics Studios
  • Make-up application from Shoppers Drug Mart
  • A free 15 photo session with Michelle Marie Photography worth $55
  • Michelle's Top Drawer and Callidora Hair Salon will do a style (Jerri-Ann Berrey) for the winner on the 19th to wear to the ceremony as well as a spray tan the same day plus a pedicure (Kari Nelson)
  • Absolut Hair Design is donating a lash tint and brow wax, along with winner's choice of a single hair extension, or hair crystals
  • An updo/style of choice available June 18, 19 or 20 at The Fringe by Kendra Moss
  • A pair of earrings for another "looking great" day from Pharmasave
  • Special custom gift for the winner from Sandi Duncan, local hairdresser
  • 12 Admission pass from the Dryden Pool & Fitness Centre
  • One pair of Sanuk flip flops from Casually Hip
  • A $50 gift card for First Impression donated by Latitude 50 Realty Inc.
  • A $20 cash donation from an anonymous donor
  • A beautiful wrist corsage from the Flower Forest
  • Mell Hall is contributing a gift certificate and pampering session with their moms to all the applicants and, for the winner, a pampering session, gift certificate and a gift basket of products

A special thanks have to be given to Pat at First Impression for starting this 'Pay it forward grad dress.' I would personally like to thank you and all the businesses and individuals for contributing to make this grad a truly memorable time for one individual. I am positive that one day, no matter how big or small, she will 'Pay it Forward' too.

We could all help by Paying it Forward in our daily lives, as well as shopping locally at the small businesses that are run by individuals just like you and me. Please visit their websites or Facebook pages in the links above, or stop in if you are in Dryden, even if it is just to say thanks.

The moment you've been waiting for...

The lucky winner is Alexzandria Shearer. Pat noted how thrilled and appreciative she was when told she was the winner. I hope to update with photos of her in June at her grad. Cheers!

Update: Congratulations on your graduation Alexzandria! Wishing you all the best in your future.
