Northern Tastes Delight in Thunder Bay

Northern Delights culinary event hits the Waterfront for the third time

The Thunder Bay culinary scene has exploded in recent years, and the city is gaining a reputation as a culinary tourism destination in Canada. This is especially true during Northern Delights. The annual food festival currently in its third incarnation is similar to many culinary events found in other cities: Winterlicious in Toronto for example, where a number of restaurants offer special prix fixe menus and patrons can try a new place every day, without breaking the bank.

“We are all offering $25 and $35 menus that are either two or three courses, and they are intended to give really great value to the diner,” says Head Chef and Co-Owner of the Red Lion Smokehouse, John Murray.

Northern Delights was created by a group of Waterfront District restaurateurs in partnership with Tourism Thunder Bay and has become one of the most anticipated culinary events of the year in Thunder Bay. “This is a stellar example of local entrepreneurs collaborating to create an experience with the potential to draw people into a retail core, and increase sales as well as visitation to the city,” says Paul Pepe, Manager of Tourism Thunder Bay.

Since its inception, Northern Delights has fed over 4,000 diners.

Alex Bono, co-owner of Red Lion Smokehouse and one of the Northern Delights organizers, adds: “it’s a really exciting event for us because it brings a lot of tourists into Thunder Bay to come and to try out new restaurants, check out The Market, and buy produce from local suppliers, but it also gets people from Thunder Bay to get out and try new restaurants.”

This year, Northern Delights features 10 waterfront restaurants using the products of over a dozen local food producers, including Haywire Farms, Big Lake Pasta, and  Belluz Farms, among many others.

Belluz Farms produces dozens of different vegetables for Northern Delights (and the general public), and Kevin Belluz says he plans to “see local produce on menus throughout the fall.”

Kevin goes on to add “if tourists are interested in combining a visit to a local farm with a visit to a restaurant for a Northern Delights meal with local food, our farm will be open for Fall Wonderland activities Sept. 30, 31 and Oct 7.”

Each restaurant will offer a two-course option for $25 and/or a three-course option for $35, and the event runs from September 26 to October 7.
