When most people think about travelling to Northern Ontario to experience a wonderful vacation at a cottage, resort or lodge, their focus is on quality family time. The clean air and water, swimming, fishing, and hiking it is all part of the wonderful experience you will enjoy.

Evening at Hastie Lake

There is a new exciting option for families that has been gaining popularity because it offers something truly unique: the opportunity to own a lake all to your self for a week or more! In Northeastern Ontario there are a number of quality air services that have remote cottages (known as outposts to anglers) on lakes that have no public access. These are situated on pristine lakes that have no other cottages or buildings: the lake is entirely yours to use. This is solitude and the true wilderness experience at its best!

Here are some of the reasons why you should consider a fly-in remote cottage for your next trip. The first is the actual flight in and out to the lake. The view from a floatplane is exceptional and you will really get to see how wonderful the northern wilderness is. You might even spot a moose from the air!

The second compelling reason is the total exclusivity. There are no cars, boats, or people loudly talking; just the serenity of the lake punctuated by a loon’s call. You can relax at the dock or beach, swim, have campfires, explore, go fishing and more! Of course the fishing at these remote lakes can only be described as incredible, as there is virtually little fishing pressure all season long. Imagine this lake is all yours to enjoy with your family, Northeastern Ontario is blessed with number of outstanding air services that have been flying people into remote cottages on lakes for over 25 years. Some of the best include:

  1. Sudbury Aviation operates 10 outpost camps just a short 30-40-minute float plane ride north of Greater Sudbury;
  2. Cochrane Air Service, which is just five minutes outside of Cochrane and is the largest outfitter in Northeastern Ontario with over 30 remote cottages on lakes;
  3. Lauzon Aviation is just off the Trans-Canada Highway near the town of Blind River. With 10 cottages that are all a short flight away from the air base;
  4. Air Ivanhoe, which is near the small town of Foleyet. It has numerous planes and some great new cottages built on remote lakes. All have solar power for lighting.

A fly-in in vacation to a remote cottage is unique and truly special for the entire family. No cellphones or computers, just quality time playing, laughing and enjoying the Great Outdoors!
