For many travelers, half the fun of vacation is finding out about interesting spots and activities that only the locals know (When in Rome, do as the Romans do). From favourite watering holes to the best place to grab a coffee, to hidden gems and unique stories that shaped a place's heritage, there's so much to discover and explore in Algoma Country.

Local insider Austin sent me this list of five incredible sights that await visitors in the town of Chapleau. The town and area is a hub to explore the region's vast wilderness if you love the outdoors and are seeking a relaxing getaway. Keep reading to find out what you've been missing out on in Chapleau.

Chapleau hosts many tourists throughout the warm months of the year but many times local hidden treasures go unnoticed. Here are five you may not have visited yet (plus a bonus at the end of the article).

1. A Mysterious Rock

The Michael Levesque Hiking / Snowshoe Trails are composed of three different hiking routes ranging from 3.5 km all the way to 7 km; this is a great way to spend an afternoon and really experience Northern Ontario. And, if you choose the right trail, you will find a mysterious rock that stands taller than most! Is it Stonehenge? Easter Island? A glacial erratic? Go have a look for yourself!

2. Morning Fog on the Water at the Chapleau Waterfront

The Chapleau Waterfront is a great way to stay cool in the summer months; it offers an excellent sandy beach along with docks and an area to launch a boat. And the pavilion, which is located near the beach, is a wonderful place to have a picnic, or even just to get some shade. But a lucky few who have been in the right place at the right time have seen this sight. It is most common in the morning so you might want to start your day at the Chapleau River! 3. Fall Colours at Peace Park

Peace Park can only be described as beautiful; it is full of fresh flowers that are well kept and it is right on Main (Birch) Street so it's easy to find. It is a great place to relax and experience the calmness that comes with being beside the Nebsquashi River. While it is maintained beautifully all summer, it is especially beautiful during fall as the leaves on the trees turn bright shades of orange and yellow. Make sure you include this on your trip, and don't forget your camera!

4. Get an Aerial View of Chapleau (by foot or by plane)

This is another great way to really see all of Chapleau and to actually experience the wilderness firsthand. To see Chapleau by plane, contact a local fly-in outfitter and arrange a flight. By foot, the best view of the town is from Chapleau Ski Hill. Not only is it a terrific hike but also has an excellent view of the forested hills that surround Chapleau. For a more accessible option, head to the top of the "walking bridge" that connects Birch and Monk Street for a good view of the town.

5. The Other Half of the Steam Engine Train Park

If you are looking for something different to experience in Chapleau, why not visit the Steam Engine train right on your way into town to learn about Chapleau's rich history? There's more than just the Old Iron Horse to see. The museum grounds include the footprints of Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson; a historic sawmill; a CP Rail caboose; a wood-carved monument to Chapleau's founding; and a monument to the French author Louis Hémon.

You don't have to go all the way to Norway to see the Northern Lights! When the Aurora Borealis is particularly active they are visible right here in Chapleau. Find a dark place on a clear night and gaze to the North for a chance to see these enchanting green lights. Bring your best photography skills and try to capture the moment like Luhtasaari Industries has here. Hint: The University of Alaska has an Aurora Forecast. The higher the number, the better your chances of seeing the Northern Lights.
