Known for its fresh sourdough loaves, pastries, coffees, and light meals, HOME Bakehouse and Café on Queen St. in downtown Sault Ste. Marie has made a name for itself as the city's must-visit spot for fresh bread.

Owners Jill and Liam are a dynamic husband and wife team. They’re not only partners in life, but entrepreneurs. Both from the Algoma area, Liam was born and raised in the Sault and Jill in Bruce Mines. They have approached their small custom bakehouse business from very different backgrounds and experiences. Jill studied hospitality, hotel and restaurant management, as well as a trained chef. Liam has a degree in sociology. While raising their four children, Jill worked in the industry, as well as managing the natural foods department at local grocery store Romes. Liam took a different route and worked in the film industry for over 10 years. Their first venture together was the bakehouse as well as a bed and breakfast (now no longer operating), which attracted many who worked in the film industry.

Jill explained that “Liam wanted to impress my mom with his bread-making skills to help win her over when they were first dating, the strategy worked and he became highly skilled in the art of breadmaking in the process.” She said, “along with his strong work ethic, my parents came to love and respect Liam as much as I do.” They first opened their business on March Street. in 2020.

"Our growth has stemmed from the fact we stay committed to the community, who have in turn invested in us. We want to stay in the downtown area because we love being part of the community downtown," says Jill.

HOME Bakehouse made the move from March St. to Queen St. in early 2022, when they realized their growing business needed more space. Through a family connection, space at Shabby Motley Handcraft Store around the corner on Queen Street became available. The owner of Shabby wanted to downsize significantly and HOME Bakehouse needed to expand. While they share the same space, the yarns and supplies Shabby Motely once fully stocked, have been moved to a small corner of the store. It's the right move for both businesses. “We have a lot of carry-over from Shabby Motley and still get many regular customers who come in and want to work on their knitting/crocheting or handcraft project and we welcome them all.” Says Jill.

HOME also carries locally made and produced gift items. “Part of our business philosophy is to work with the local community, who is also entrenched within the community” Jill shared.

“Our short-term goals are to ensure we can fulfill our orders and carry out what we promise.” Our longer-term goal is to expand into outdoor seating and welcome more customers. “We have a team of six including Liam and myself and our big latest addition is an espresso machine so we are able to cater to those who are looking for a delicious espresso bar. Our baristas are ready to serve you!” said Jill.

It’s about “slow food”, where everything is made from scratch offering a relaxed, friendly and homey atmosphere for their customers. A great addition to the growing dynamic of downtown Sault Ste. Marie. Well done Jill and Liam!
