Trading Posts and General Stores have deep roots in Algoma Country. Both the Hudson’s Bay Company and the North West Company set up trading posts along the trade route in our region. For those who aren’t quite sure of the purpose of a trading post, it was a place where people traded goods, but also a place for people to meet and exchange news of the world, or just from their home country. The fur trade in our region brought many settlers and helped to establish communities.

And with early settlers also came businesses, like general stores. Old-fashioned general stores are one-stop shopping for local residents living in remote areas, and a place to socialize. In Algoma Country, we still have general stores that offer this nostalgic type of shopping with modern conveniences. Stores and posts offer quality products, some locally made, and necessities you need during your stay, or purchase items to commemorate your trip.

Below is the complete list of general stores and trading posts and what they offer travellers. A perfect addition to your trip to Algoma!
