Making the Most of your March Break!

"Boredom" isn't in Northeastern Ontario's Vocabulary

The March Break is quickly approaching, and that means that you need to decide what you are going to do with your kids for the week-long vacation from school. If you explore Northeastern Ontario, you will find so many things for the whole family to do, it will be hard to fit them all into one week! Plus, there are lots of opportunities for the kids to learn, while still having a ton of fun! (And PS: many of these places offer annual memberships, in case you love them so much and you want to come back... we think you will!)

Sudbury is full of kid-friendly activities that can be enjoyed rain, snow, or shine. Two of the most popular attractions are Science North and Dynamic Earth. At Dynamic Earth, there is a new “Under the Arctic” exhibit currently open, and brand new this month, Science North's “Guinness Book of World Records” exhibit will allow you to see the science behind world records, as well as to try to break some world records for yourself! This exhibit is opening March 7—just in time for the March Break. The other permanent exhibits will also be on display at both centres, and you can visit the Imax Theatre and Planetarium at Science North, or visit the “Big Nickel” and explore the underground mine tour at Dynamic Earth.

For the March Break, you can purchase one of their “Dynamic Duo Passport” admissions (which can be used over three days) and get a second one for 50% off! This gives you admission to both Science North and Dynamic Earth, as well as into some of their paid attractions, at a discounted rate—perfect for a family trip!

The calendar may say that it is almost spring, but that doesn’t mean that winter activities are anywhere close to being done in Northeastern Ontario. There is still lots of snow, and the conditions are perfect for all of your winter sports! For skiers and snowboarders, be sure to visit Antoine Mountain in Mattawa! Boasting Ontario’s longest ski run, and set on one of Ontario’s highest peaks, Antoine Mountain has 15 runs varying in difficulty to accommodate all skill levels. And for the March Break, Antoine Mountain is even offering ski and snowboard camps for the kids to be able to learn the skills necessary to hit the slopes.

There are local resorts, inns, and bed & breakfasts for you to book accommodations at if you’d like to extend your stay in the area. You can even book a cabin to stay in at the Canadian Ecology Centre, where there are also skiing and outdoor activities to explore.

A must-see destination on the March Break is the Canadian Polar Bear Habitat—the largest Polar Bear habitat facility in the world! Take the kids up to Cochrane, where they can meet the resident polar bears of the centre: Inukshuk, Ganuk, Henry, and Eddy. Here you can watch the polar bears living within the Habitat enclosures, or listen to the polar bear experts give presentations about the bears and their habitats, and the challenges they face today. The experts say that the best chance of getting to see the polar bears is in the morning, but because the bears are free to do what they want within the enclosures, you may see them at many different points throughout the day! Presentations take place at different times each day during the week, so make sure to check out the Canadian Polar Bear Habitat website to see the full schedule, and to learn more about the centre.

So, if you're looking to make the most of the March Break, be sure to look up Northeastern Ontario and take your family on an adventure they won't soon forget!
